CONTRACTOR REQUESTS MORE TIME TO DELIVER EZIBELENI TRANSFORMER

The substation transformer of Ezibeleni is still under repairs after the service provider for repairs requested more time. The transformer was taken in for repairs after experiencing mechanical faults, leading to power overload and subsequent intermittent outages.

The contractor, based in Johannesburg had previously assured the Municipality that the transformer would be delivered on 20 June but final tests detected more faults which are now being addressed. According to the contractor, the delay is also due to the contractor being overstretched as many transformers across the country were brought in for repairs since the winter season began, affecting set timeframes.

Issues being addressed include winding of coil, oven-baking, assembling as well as testing.

While awaiting delivery of the transformer, Enoch Mgijima Municipality installed other substation elements which include wiring, panels, breakers and protection kit. This will ensure that the transformer will be installed on arrival to minimise time needed before energising.

The Municipality assures Ezibeleni communities that all possible measures are being taken to remedy the current electricity situation and electricity supply will soon be back to normal. On 1 July, Municipal Management visited the contractor doing repairs and progress has been noted.

The Municipality apologises to all affected communities and businesses affected.
