FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

08/12/2025

Phase 1 of the Smart Meter installation project has been completed. Installations ensued on 20 August 2025 in Ezibeleni and Mlungisi areas and was completed on 04 December.

This project saw a working partnership by the main contractor and local sub-contractors.  Work was also made easy by community members who cooperated with the contractors and authorities throughout the installation period.

Certaib technical challenges were encountered due to vandalised, stolen and at times, dilapidated infrastructure. The Municipality is in a process of addressing infrastructural defects in Mlungisi. Auditing of infrastructure has been carried out and will be rolled out at the beginning of 2026. The same initiative was undertaken in Ezibeleni, leaving the area with optimal infrastructure conditions.

The smart metering project is funded by  national Treasury for the installation all 35000 meters in Enoch Mgijima.

All meters will be replaced with smart meter to ensure conducive supply of the electricity service.
