In the quest to improve the quality of roads, Enoch Mgijima Municipality recently introduced a new road construction project to Ezibeleni communities in a public meeting. Work on the project will begin on within the month of October.
The project will involve the stripping and reconstruction of the taxi route around in the Unathi Mkefa area of Ezibeleni. The road surface is mainly gravel with a portion of tar. This will be replaced by paving blocks which the Municipality has decided to use because of durability and ease of maintenance.
Different from typical construction projects, the Municipality will do the construction using internal resources, without a contractor. This move has been made to minimise expenditure and improve scope and impact.
Portfolio Head for Technical Services Cllr Mhlangabezi Mangcotywa said “this project is a result of the IDP roadshows where communities indicated a dire need for this route. The project will take a period of 8 months and will cover a distance of 3.9 kilometres. We need all members of the community to support and protect this endeavour. The Council will play its support and oversight role to ensure that it is completed within the projected time”.
While the project is not implemented by a contractor, a consultant was appointed and will be on site offering all necessary professional and technical work to ensure quality.
The scope includes stormwater management as uncontrolled rain water had caused massive damage to the existing road. Local contractors and communities will participate. A project steering committee to oversee the construction process was duly elected by the community, representing all affected areas.
