As the winter season sets in, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality urges all electricity consumers to use power economically to avoid overloading the system.
The Municipality has observed a sharp increase in electricity usage across the region, with substation readings indicating significant strain during peak hours on cold days. This overload often results in tripped breakers, damaged equipment, cable faults, and widespread power outages.
We appeal to all households and businesses to play an active role in conserving electricity, particularly during the early mornings and evenings when demand is highest.
Currently, the Western and Mlungisi substations are already experiencing overcurrent conditions—despite winter only just beginning.
In response, the Municipality has embarked on a programme to refurbish and upgrade critical substations. Work is already underway at the Mlungisi substation. Further announcements will follow regarding the Ebden substation, which is urgently in need of repairs to ensure service reliability. The Western substation, which supplies power to Frontier Hospital, is also a top priority.
Additionally, a brand-new substation is under construction in Sterkstroom to enhance electricity supply for the area and ensure all citizens have access to reliable energy services.
We have submitted a funding application to the Office of the Premier, who has expressed strong interest in supporting the Municipality’s efforts to improve electricity infrastructure.
