Municipality to act on tampered Smart Meters
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality will take harsh action against customers found tampering with the newly installed smart meters. A total of 7 meters have been tempered in Mlungisi and Ezibeleni.
The tampers have been remotely detected by the system, and an investigation into it has ensued. The meters and the entire infrastructure will be removed, and based on the investigation results, criminal cases willbe opened against the customer and others who are involved.
Over 7000 smart meters have been installed in Mlungisi and Ezibeleni thus far, and the system that detects tampers is already live and will help in alleviating distribution losses. The municipality encourages citizens to report illegal connections, including tampers.
In ensuring a smooth and quick installation process, the main contractor hired 10 qualified local contractors to participate in the project. This has helped in ensuring that over 200 meters are installed daily. Tampering, or any other illegal act, will undermine the work done, considering that the municipality has been battling distribution losses at a rate of 49%. The smart meters remain the most viable solution to electricity losses, and the municipality commends all community members supporting the initiative.
