The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has relocated informal traders on Komani Street to a new location. This relocation aims to improve the trading conditions and environment for these businesses while ensuring that their activities are better regulated and aligned with the municipality’s urban planning and development goals.
In December 2024, the municipality informed businesses operating in the area about the relocation to a new location.By relocating the traders to a designated area, the municipality can better regulate their activities, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and reducing the risk of informal trading in undesignated areas.
The business area faced challenges such as overcrowding, lack of proper facilities, and issues related to the sale of alcohol and drugs to youth,temparing with municipal infrastructure often necessitated the relocation of these traders to more suitable areas.
The municipality notes the relocation process may cause disruptions to the traders’ businesses however, the relocation of informal traders can also be part of a broader urban renewal and development strategy aimed at revitalizing and upgrading public spaces and improving the overall aesthetic and functional appeal of the area.
The municipality remains committed to supporting informal traders and acknowledges their importance and contribution to the local economy.
