Media Release

14/12/2024

Enoch Mgijima Municipality and Eskom agree to collaborate towards addressing the current electricity challenges faced by the Municipality. The two institutions held a meeting on 10 December 2024 to further discuss possible agreements to enter into a formal “Active Partnering” agreement.

The collaboration has immediately hit the ground running wherein a comprehensive plan which is already being implemented has been drawn to resolve the current Komani power outage problems.

Eskom technical team was in Komani on Friday 13 December visiting affected sites. From Sunday 15 December, they will be back in Komani and be part of electricity restoration efforts in Top Town. The Eskom team will be working in collaboration with the Municipal team to restore all areas that are still not connected. Priority has been given to the Kingsway cable which will be entirely replaced. The second priority is the Van Reebieck, Frost and Water Treatment Works lines which will first be tested before being either repaired or replaced.

More interventions will be looked at which include improvements at Ebden street, upgrade of protection scheme, as well as creation of ring feeding capabilities to minimise inconvenience to customers during supply interruptions.

The current electricity outage problems in Komani began on 22 October affecting mainly Top Town and Central. About 80% of the areas that were affected are now back on.

There are no exact completion timelines set at this stage as tests will determine the action plan in some of the sites. The Municipality aims to have the whole of Komani back on early next week.
