The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality wishes to address recent developments regarding land use management and community engagement within our jurisdiction.

We have noted with concern the panic caused in Lesseyton village following reports that a municipal vehicle was used to spread false information regarding house demolitions. The Municipality wishes to categorically state that it has not applied for, nor obtained, a demolition order for Lesseyton. The Municipality outright distances itself on the actions of the alleged employees who caused such mayhem.

This unfortunate incident is currently under internal investigation. The officials involved are under investigation and will be subjected to disciplinary processes should the outcomes of the investigations warrant same. We assure the community that we take such matters seriously and are committed to maintaining transparency and accountability.

While Lesseyton is not affected, the Municipality remains committed to upholding the rule of law regarding land use management. We have recently taken decisive action to enforce court orders related to land infringements in other parts of the municipality.

The rise in illegal land occupation and unauthorised land use undermines service delivery and community development. Consequently, the Municipality has obtained court orders to reclaim unlawfully occupied land and remove infringing structures. These enforcement processes are carried out in strict adherence to legal procedures and human rights, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

We emphasise that the Municipality communicates with communities through Ward Councillors regarding any transgressions. We believe in a consultative approach and encourage residents to engage directly with their ward representatives to verify information and prevent misunderstandings.

We urge all residents to adhere to land use regulations and cooperate with municipal officials during enforcement operations and to report any land infringements for prompt action to ensure sustainable development for all.
